"After reading an advance copy, I can safely say that Hines has written another very good, wide-ranging, and thought-provoking collection. As usual, he covers a broad group of topics and subjects. There are some very affecting pieces dealing with loss; the author lost his father, a former NFL player, to CTE around the time he was starting the manuscript, and these experiences are the basis for a few of the pieces. But the majority of this book covers ground on which he is very strong: fiction, military service, sports, and the dark and bright side of our unique American culture. Cathedrals in the Twilight (Published December, 2020)

"The author's fourth book shows his range with 46 pieces of poetry and verse with the outdoors as the primary setting. But my favorite is a long one near the end called "Empty Colosseum," in which he appears to look back over his and his father's athletic career with conflicting emotions, then walks away, leaving it all behind. The visit to the empty stadium and the trajectory of his thoughts are metaphors for his journey to freedom and life beyond the game and its culture. "The author branches out into a new genre and shows us that the outdoors and even the craft of creating art can be havens of renewal, regeneration, and reflection. He takes us on a trip from the Mesopotamian night as viewed from a combat veteran, to the fall woods of Quantico, Virginia, to one of the most famous rivers in the history of Texas, to the shattered streets of the Yugoslavian civil wars, to the Rocky Mountains, to surfing a dangerous wave along the pristine Oregon coast, to watching the sunset in Yosemite Valley, and many places in between. But he saves the most powerful work for the end of the book. In "Empty Colosseum," he returns to visit the cavernous and empty stadium where he and his father played football decades prior. As he moves across the field's expanse, he ponders the victories and losses and then asks why it was so important to both of them at one finite point in each of their lives. The author of five books including the Anthology Trilogy and the highly-regarded longform piece, "Bring in the Gladiators," and the creator, writer, and producer of the pioneering and critically-acclaimed Welcome to the Machine podcast, Glen Hines was born and raised in Houston, Texas, and graduated from George Washington University School of Law in Washington, DC. His writing on military service, sports, current events, the outdoors, and the bright and dark sides of American culture has been published in various outlets, such as Sports Illustrated, Task and Purpose, the Human Development Project, Medium, and Amazon. The Welcome to the Machine podcast was featured on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Kindle, and Audible.

The son of a professional athlete and a career English teacher, he began his writing career as a lawyer, working for a few years in a corporate legal department and law firm. Needing a greater challenge and seeking a higher calling, in 1997, he entered the United States Marine Corps as an officer and military lawyer. For over two decades, he has served in various roles as a prosecutor, appellate government counsel, terrorism prosecutor in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and military trial and appellate judge five different times. Now with over 25 years of service, he is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, having served overseas in Kuwait, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Naval Station Bahrain, and elsewhere. From 2000-2002 and 2012-2014, he also served two stints as a federal prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice.

A former NCAA Division 1 letterman in football and baseball at two different schools, he is the only University of Arkansas two-sport athlete to have played on conference championship football and baseball teams (1989). His military service and athletic career have provided the ideas and basis for countless stories in his books and elsewhere.

He is also a member of the Family Advisory Board at the Boston University CTE Center's Concussion Legacy Foundation and a member of the Surfrider Foundation. He has taught at the Naval Justice School, the Army Judge Advocate General's School, the University of Arkansas School of Law, and Texas A&M University Law School.

He was inducted into the Authors Guild in 2022.
